Over 900 athletes from nine countries will compete in ten disciplines, in Budva, Bar, Podgorica, Cetinje and Tivat.
Visiting Montenegro these days, representatives of all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) – Chefs de Mission, as well as members of the Technical Committee of the Games of the Small States of Europe, who are scheduled to inspect all competition areas and accommodation capacities. Moreover, they will receive all other necessary information about the organization of the first multi-sport competition and the biggest sports event ever held in Montenegro.
"I think that our guests are pleased with what they have seen so far, especially the facilities that we have, and will be ready for them at the end of May," said Predrag Marsenic, the Sports Director of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee.
"The basketball hall in Bar is in great condition, the swimming pool as well, but there are some problems with the athletic track, which I am certain will be resolved quickly. We are eagerly waiting for the start, we are coming out with 50 athletes and hope to collect some medals, "said Jordi Orteu, Chef de Mission from Andorra.
Olga Piperidou, his colleague from Cyprus, is convinced that Montenegro would be a good host.
"We see a great desire for everything to be ready and it will be, on the basis of what we have seen. We look forward to coming here, and will have, I believe, a good team, ready to compete on a high level", she said.
The Games of the Small States of Europe, involving athletes from countries with less than a million inhabitants - Andorra, Malta, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Iceland, Monaco and Montenegro - have been held since 1985 under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee.
For competitors from these countries, this is a manifestation of great prestige, but also a real sport festival, or rather – small sized Olympic Games.
"We are particularly proud of the fact that the swimming competition will be a qualification event for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which is the first time this occurs at the GSSE. This is a manifestation that all participants are looking forward to and for which the athletes are preparing specifically", concluded Marsenic.
